NABB NATHAN (USA)



Dr. Nathan Nabb, Associate Professor of Saxophone, joined the music faculty at Stephen F. Austin State University in 2010. His debut solo recording, Tangled Loops, features the works of Jason Eckardt, Luciano Berio, Philippe Hurel and Milton Babbitt and was released on Amp Recordings in 2009. Dr. Winston Choi, Chair of the Piano Division at Roosevelt University, is the collaborative pianist featured on the works by Eckardt and Babbitt. His second solo recording, Distances, due out in late fall 2010, features the music of Albright, Lennon, Djupstrom and Hyla. Dr. Nabb is in demand as a performer and clinician and has performed across the United States as well as in Asia and Europe. Dr. Nabb’s teaching and performance career is featured in an interview in the March/April 2010 issue of the Saxophone Journal.

As a chamber musician, Dr. Nabb is currently the soprano chair of the Oasis Quartet—other members of the group are James Bunte, Dave Camwell and Jim Romain. Their eponymous debut recording, featuring the music of Glass, Gotkovsky and Escaich, will be released in the fall of 2010 on Innova Records. Along with the Northshore Trio (Nathan Nabb and Masahito Sugihara, saxophones and Winston Choi, piano), Nathan recorded new works by Japanese composer Mari Takano for the BIS record label in February 2010. Nathan is a two-time winner of the Northwestern University Chamber Music competition, a finalist at the Coleman International Chamber Music Competition and a three-time semifinalist at the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition, winning the silver medal in 2001.

Dr. Nabb often performs with the St. Louis Symphony, New World Symphony and IRIS Chamber Orchestra where he has worked with renowned conductors Michael Tilson-Thomas, David Robertson, Marin Alsop, Michael Stern, Keith Lockhart and many more. In the summer of 2004, Nathan performed in the second major staging of John Adams’ Nixon in China with St. Louis Symphony and Opera Theater St. Louis.

Dr. Nabb’s students have won many competitions both in solo and chamber music settings and have been featured in performances and master classes at North American Saxophone Alliance regional and national conferences, as well as other local and regional clinics. Dr. Nabb received his Doctor of Music (2008) and Master of Music (2003) degrees in saxophone performance from Northwestern University, where he studied with Dr. Frederick Hemke. He received his Bachelor of Music degree (2002) in saxophone performance from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he studied with Professor Debra Richtmeyer.
